Billiards is the game that is most closely intertwined with history and many branches of culture. References to its ancient forms have been found as far back as the 13th century. The earliest documented description of billiards is that King Louis XI of France purchased a billiard table from master carpenter Henri de Vigne in 1470.

Its true triumph dates from the mid-16th century. By this time, it was already found in the ruling class. Several English writers, including William Shakespeare, mentioned the increasingly popular game in their works.

Types of pool tables

The different types of pool tables are differentiated by their size and can basically be divided into three broad categories: pool, snooker and carom.

Pool pieces come in four further classifications: gaming tables, products for home use, so-called chip models - used in clubs and nightclubs - and competition pool tables.

When size matters

The sizing of pool tables is given in the Anglo-Saxon unit of measurement, "feet". 1 foot is equivalent to 30.48 centimetres. Products categorised in this way have the following parameters:

• Game billiard tables - up to 4', 5', 6'. These game tables are made of simpler, cheaper materials. They are mainly suitable for children who are just getting to know the game.
• Home models - up to sizes 7', 8', 9'. Here you can also find more serious pieces.
  Commercial billiard tables - up to sizes 6', 7', 8'.
• Tournament tables must meet the requirements of international rules (specific hole size, wall height, etc.). According to these, their size must be strictly limited to 9'.

Quality

To put it very simply, the cheaper pool tables have a wooden playing surface, these are the wood-paneled pieces. In contrast, the playing surface of the more serious tables is slate. High-end products differ in their design, their individuality and the quality of their materials.

In addition, the precision manufacturing process - the precision cutting with CNC machines, the multi-layer lacquering of the wood veneers, the special design of the so-called "pockets", the special finish of the table walls that affect the speed of the ball rebound, and the grain of the poster covering the table - can mean the difference between outstanding first-class models.
